MWR and the Virginia Beach USO put together a nice show for military members at the Little Creek Amphibious Base on Friday, August 7th, 2009. Although I am not a fan of country music, my girlfriend is.
She really wanted to go and I'm a nice guy so I agreed to go with her. Sure I felt out of place but sometimes one must compromise in a relationship. Right?!
We got there around 5:00 and the show didn't really start 'till 7. Apparently everybody knew to take chairs except for us. So we stood most of the time, save the few times we just sat on the grass and got nice little green stains on our jeans.
7 finally rolled around and some local country singers came on stage. It was the most boring thing I had ever seen. People just stood there (or like most, sat there) and barely nodded their heads at the music. Hours went by and at 8:30 Jason Aldean came out with the usual light show they provide for the main event. His songs started strong and got slower and more boring towards the middle and end.
By this time, every single person on that lawn was on their feet, with a 36 oz beer in their hands and still just slightly nodding their necks at the music. Some danced, others sang a long. I stood there, badazled by the experience of what they call a "Country Concert". I honstly just didn't see what was so great about it.
People can talk down hip-hop and R&B. Say whatever they want about it, but it doesn't take much to see where the fun is at. I'm not an advocate for new artist like Soulja Boy, Drake and the lot of them. And sure I agree hip-hop is not what it used to be, but I would still prefer to see a rap concert than a country one, minus Soulja Boy.
After it was all said and done, it was 9:30pm and we were headed out. My girlfriend said she had a great time. I smiled and said I was glad she did, and that her having fun made me have fun as well. To be honest, if she hadn't been there I would have had the worst 4 hours of my life.
Apart from it all, it was very generous of MWR, the USO and all the sponsors to put on such a great and enjoyable show for country fans. Mostly though, of Jason Aldean for doing the show free of charge for military and their families.
A little appreciation goes a long way. It's people like him that make us proud to serve.
